REEForestation’s main goal is to hasten recovery of coral reefs that had been damaged by human activities and natural causes. The project is a reef rehabilitation and enhancement initiative through seeding of cultured giant clams and deployment of ceramic artificial reefs (CAR) on selected reef areas. Marine protected areas need to be enhanced in order to fast track their recovery and to increase the fish density in a shorter span of time. Giant clam restocking has been proven to be an excellent enhancement and rehabilitation technique. Several case studies have shown that when clam gardens are established, fish density and biodiversity increase once the clams reach sexual maturity and start spawning. REEForestation has been done several times through out the decade. Sites that have been seeded previously with cultured clams are Batangas (Anilao), Palawan, Zamboanga, Misamis Oriental, Bataan, Zambales, and Quezon. This year, Earthbound Environmental Consulting and Blue Water Consultancy are teaming up for a two-weekend clam seeding and CAR deployment in Batangas. Everybody is encouraged to join and take part in this initiative! Volunteers and sponsors needed. reeforestation.weebly.com/index.html
